Hints & Tips:

8. The Reception

The Receiving Line
As guests arrive at the reception it is customary to be greeted by the bridal party. This usually consists of the Bride’s parents, as hosts, the Groom’s parents, the Bride and Groom, chief bridesmaid, and other attendants, and the best man. Attendants may or may not be included, probably depending on the number of guests, and how long it will take to greet them all!
Make sure the guests have a drink while they are waiting in line.

The Toastmaster
If you have the services of a toastmaster, then it is his job to make sure that things run smoothly, and to time. He will announce the guests, bring through the Bride and Groom, announce the cutting of the cake, and introduce the speakers.

The Speeches
The speeches normally take place at the end of the meal, before, or after, the cutting and serving of the cake.

1) The Bride’s Father (or whoever has given-away the Bride), begins, usually with a few stories of his daughters’ childhood! He ends by proposing a toast to his daughter and her new husband.

2) The Groom then responds to this toast, and thanks the best man and the bridesmaids, usually presenting them with a small gift. He may also say a few words about his new wife, and extend thanks to their families for their help and support. He then toasts the bridesmaids.

3)
The Best Man thanks the Groom on behalf of the bridesmaids, and then reads out the cards and telegrams. It is customary for the best man to make a lighthearted speech, being careful not to offend! If the cake has not yet been cut, he can end by announcing that the Bride and Groom will cut the cake.

4) The Bride can also make a speech if she wishes, and other relatives and guests may like to say a few words. The toastmaster or best man should ensure this doesn’t get out of hand!

Once these formalities are over, it is customary for the Bride and Groom to take the floor for the first dance... and then the party can begin!
